Introduction to Naval Shipbuilding endorsed as a micro-credential by SA Skills Commission

Tuesday, March 29, 2022

The Naval Shipbuilding College (NSC) developed courses ‘Introduction to Naval Shipbuilding’ and ‘Naval Ship Systems for Engineers’ have received endorsement from the SA Skills Commission as a micro-credential.

A micro-credential is a course shorter than a qualification that demonstrates skills, knowledge, and/or experience in a subject area or capability.

This endorsement means the ‘Introduction to Naval Shipbuilding’ and ‘Naval Ship Systems for Engineerscourses recognise the learning outcomes delivered meet current and future industry needs. Learners gain the relevant skills, knowledge and attributes required by industry.

NSC Training and Education Director Nick Howie said: “The courses we are developing at NSC, for delivery with our training and education partners nationally, are integral elements of ensuring people entering Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry understand the unique and complex knowledge and working environment.”

The NSC developed the Introduction to Naval Shipbuilding course to recognise a need to enhance understanding of Naval Shipbuilding and equip individuals with industry’s fundamentals.

TAFE SA currently delivers the course online, and students can complete the course at their own pace within a defined time. Launched with TAFE SA in April 2021, more than 80 students have completed the course to date. The next intake will commence on 4 April 2022.

TAFE SA Chief Executive David Coltman says the course enables participants to familiarise themselves with Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Industry and prepare for a future working in the industry.

“Our focus at TAFE SA is on preparing students for the jobs of the future and we’ve been working closely with the Naval Shipbuilding College on skills development for some time,” he says.

“The Introduction to Naval Shipbuilding introduces a range of key concepts, terminology and relationships that are useful for jobseekers to know and understand prior to gaining employment in shipbuilding.

“We’re really pleased that the training has been endorsed as a micro-credential.”
