Important announcement on submarines
Thursday, September 30, 2021
On 16 September 2021, the Government announced an enhanced trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States (AUKUS).
The first initiative under AUKUS will be to seek an optimal pathway for the acquisition of at least eight nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Australian Navy.
As a result of this decision, the Government has decided not to proceed with the Attack Class Submarine Program for the acquisition of 12 conventionally powered-submarines.
The Government has established the Nuclear-Powered Submarine Task Force. The Task Force will examine all aspects of the nuclear-powered submarine program for Australia, including the requirements for our sovereign workforce.
