This is a proud period in Australia’s naval shipbuilding industry following the Commonwealth’s $90 billion commitment to modernise and strengthen Australia’s naval forces whilst building a strong, sovereign and sustainable Australian shipbuilding, supply support and sustainment industry.


With this momentous investment over 30 years, one of the significant challenges will be to ensure there are enough workers to fill the 15,000 skilled and professional jobs created to build and sustain our Future Fleet, including the Arafura-Class Offshore Patrol Vessels, Future Submarines and Hunter-Class Frigates.


That’s where the Naval Shipbuilding College comes in.


Established by the Australian Government, our team is implementing a “hub-and-spoke” model. Based at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia, our organisation is reaching across the nation, developing partnerships with industry, education and training providers.


The College will ensure courses currently offered in Australia align with future industry needs and produce the right number of skilled and professional ‘job-ready’ graduates. It will also provide dedicated pathways for skilled workers to transition from adjacent industries and will boost industries’ retention capabilities.


To do this we are working closely with industry to gain an understanding of workforce requirements for the naval shipbuilding enterprise, essentially determining what jobs will be available, how many jobs there will be and when they’ll start.


We’re also collaborating with education and training providers to build a suite of endorsed programs that will provide the future workforce with the skills they need to snap up future jobs. By the middle of 2019 we will have more endorsed courses in every state and territory. This growing Training and Education Provider Network will lead to more Australians securing great jobs and extremely rewarding career pathways.


The College is also ramping up engagement with students through a dedicated STEM High School Strategy that will help to inspire and guide our brightest minds to pursue exciting naval shipbuilding careers.


Already hundreds of students and workers considering a naval shipbuilding career have joined our Workforce Register. We expect many more thousands to follow, as we engage with all aspects of our community to elevate naval shipbuilding to a career of choice.


The Workforce Register is the main gateway to the world’s most technologically advanced projects and exceptionally exciting careers.


Once registered our team will provide candidates with personalised advice to help them seize the variety of opportunities, from working on the ship deck, to design or program management, just to name a few.


I would like to recognise our growing family of stakeholders from industry, the education and training sector, peak representative bodies, the Commonwealth and State Governments.
